About Meerhay Manor

Meerhay Manor is a thatched hamstone house at the foot of the southern slopes of the Dorset Downs. It has stone floors and mullioned windows. Its exact age is unknown, but it was rebuilt in 1610. There are four acres of garden, featuring many exotic tree species, and 35 acres of rolling farmland surround the property. We have a number of animals including horses and ponies, dogs, and a flock of Portland sheep.

We started having Writing Weekend Workshops and short Writing Courses at Meerhay in 1998. It was the brainchild of our friend and neighbour Lynne Reid Banks (Author of The L Shaped Room, The Indian in the Cupboard etc) who kindly consented to run our first course. Since then we have acquired a small number of specialist tutors covering comedy, crime and creative writing.

The house is a family home and we hope to create an informal, friendly atmosphere for our writers to relax and enjoy a break from their everyday lives and think about their shared interest in writing. An opportunity to relax in the company of like minded people in the peace and quiet of rural Dorset. A chance to enjoy some good home cooking made from our home grown produce. We have a flock of rare breed Portland sheep and an extensive vegetable garden.

The small town of Beaminster is only a mile away and we are located just seven miles from the coast and the small harbour of West Bay (where Harbour Lights was filmed) The nearest BR station is Crewkerne approx two and a half hours from London Waterloo.
